" In her later years, Ruth Margaret Gallagher, our much-loved mom, became an 'explorer.' Determined to walk from La Crosse to her childhood home in Chicago, she would slip out any unguarded door. After frantic searches and subsequent trips to the E.R., we reluctantly admitted her to The Lighthouse at Riverside in La Crosse.
Under the care of the kind and professional staff, Mom thrived at The Lighthouse. She enjoyed the creative projects, ate meals with 'her gang', and often said she loved her 'art school.' As her dementia progressed, the staff was there for her — and for us. They taught us how to minimize her confusion and to help her enjoy each day.
When Mom's life drew to a close, The Lighthouse caregivers kept her comfortable. They wrapped her in a cheery yellow quilt, brought her out each morning to watch the birds and showed us how to ease her final days.
From the day Mom arrived at Eagle Crest Communities to the evening she died the entire staff treated Mom and all of us— her adult children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—with affection and respect. We are especially grateful to the staff of The Lighthouse for the peace and happiness they brought to our mom and all of our family."
